Time to dust off your amateur and family home movies and bring them to the Academy Museum for a free event in the Shirley Temple Education Studio. Home Movie Day 2023 is a fun and informative event that will shine a light on your films (literally!) while adding to the greater understanding of Los Angeles history.

Long before phone cameras and social media, small-gauge film stock like 16mm, Super 8, and videotape were the means for people to document their lives at home and abroad. For over 20 years, Home Movie Day events all over the world have made it possible for individuals to share and reconnect with their own films. The Academy Museum in partnership with the Academy Film Archive and regional Home Movie Day volunteers invite you to a free event in the Lower Lobby and the Shirley Temple Education Studio from 10am–4pm, welcoming participants who may have family films but not necessarily the equipment or access to view them. Bring your films or join us to just watch, come and go as you like, but bear in mind capacity is limited.

SCHEDULE

10am-3pm | Drop-off materials for inspection, exploration of film gauges, button-making, and consultation with media archivists

12pm-4pm | Open community screening with games and prizes

INSPECTION

Home Movie Day volunteers, including media archivists, will be in the studio to inspect and project your treasures and answer questions. Following careful inspection and prepping of the films, there will be an open screening, Home Movie bingo games, prizes, and more!

DIGITIZATION

Sign up early for the opportunity to digitize your analog media (one item per participant, first-come first-served) through our partners the UCLA AMIA (Association of Moving Image Archivists) Student Chapter and UCLA IS Media Preservation Lab. Home movies will be digitized and transferred to a drive so you can watch them with your family and community without any special equipment! A selection of the digitized films will be screened in the Education Studio in the afternoon.

Click here if you’d like to submit your media for digitization. Remember you can always just show up on Home Movie Day with your reels for inspection and screening!

Please join us for the 100th anniversary of the 16mm format to celebrate amateur moviemaking of all kinds.

Home Movie Day is a free event and does not include General Admission to the museum. General Admission tickets are available by purchase in advance through this link or in-person at the Winkler Welcome Center.
