Día de Muertos with Lil’ Libros Book Signing and Family Workshop
Join Lil’ Libros founders Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein, the authors of La Catrina: Emotions/Emociones, and Mariana Galvez, author of Where is? / ¿Dónde está? Mi Ofrenda, for a reading and book signing followed by a family workshop.
The Academy Museum Education and Retail teams invite families to meet Lil’ Libros authors Patty Rodriguez, Ariana Stein, and Mariana Galvez.
Enjoy a reading and book signing with Lil’ Libros founders and authors of the La Catrina book series Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein. Their book La Catrina: Emotions/Emociones is inspired by the iconic La Catrina figure of Día de Muertos or “Day of the Dead.” This book introduces children to emotional expressions in English and Spanish.
We will also be joined by Lil’ Libros author Mariana Galvez for a reading and book signing of her newest book Where is? / ¿Dónde está? Mi Ofrenda, a search and find book to teach little ones how to find special everyday items to build their family altar for Día de Muertos.
After the reading and book signing, join museum educators for a mini printmaking workshop creating prints inspired by the work of José Guadalupe Posada who created the famous calavera (skull) called “La Calavera Catrina.” Rooted deep within Mexican culture, Catrina is considered to be the most recognizable symbol of Día de Muertos.
In addition to the book signing and workshop, we encourage visitors to attend our COCO (2017) screening at 11 am in the Ted Mann Theater. The screening is part of our weekly Family Matinees film series. A separate admission ticket is required.

Bios
Mariana Galvez was born in Mexico and grew up in South Los Angeles. In her childhood, it was during weekend trips to the library that her love for illustrating and writing was forged. After a number of years in the corporate world, she was called back to illustrating when creating art for her three children. She is the artist behind Little Astrology Catrinas. She currently resides in Whittier, CA with her husband where she loves to garden, cook vegan food, and chase after her beloved dog and cat.
Lil’ Libros was founded by two mothers, Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein, who saw that there was a shortage of bilingual books for children. Their mission became to introduce bilingualism and Latin American culture through picture board books. Lil’ Libros was created to inspire parents to read to their children and encourage them to do so in two languages. They believe children’s books are seeds that when nourished allow for a child to turn their dreams into reality. Their goal is to make the world a better place by providing authentic stories that promote inclusivity and love!
