The Housemaid (하녀) with A Good Lawyer’s Wife (바람난가족)

The Housemaid (하녀)
Im Sang-soo’s 2010 The Housemaid is a remarkable remake of the 1960 original, the first feature of Kim Ki-young’s Housemaid Trilogy. Money, love, and power, together, are the base motif which inspires, fuels, flourishes, and destroys housemaid Eun-yi (Jeon Do-yeon) and the family she serves. Youn Yuh-jung depicts Byung-sik, the lead, senior housemaid who has been with the family for a long time. Youn finesses the portrayal of Byung-sik, whose intent and aspiration are enigmatic amongst the other characters whose actions are motivated by belligerent absurdity.

A Good Lawyer’s Wife (바람난가족)
In A Good Lawyer’s Wife, Youn Yuh-jung portrays Byung-han, a woman in her 60s who never experienced an orgasm for the entirety of her marriage, but finally discovers her true sexuality which she pursues by shamelessly having an affair with her former classmate. The director Im Sang-soo bluntly dives into the core space of human dilemma triggered and affected by sexual desire and dissects the dilemma against society’s moral codes. Most likely, we, the audience, will encounter chaos and confusion while experiencing the audacious actions of the characters, who, seemingly, can only survive through chaos.
