John Schlesinger directed this lavish adaptation of Nathanael West’s bleak 1939 novel about Hollywood in the 1930s. Karen Black stars as Faye Greener, a gorgeous young starlet who attracts the attention of every man she meets, including a talented young art director (William Atherton) and an ailing Midwesterner (Donald Sutherland), leading to tragic results. The film earned nominations for Conrad Hall’s evocative cinematography and Burgess Meredith’s moving performance as Faye’s vaudevillian father. Two-time Oscar winner Ann Roth (The English Patient) designed vivid costumes that depict every stratum of Los Angeles society.
