Steve McQueen’s Small Axe cycle of films collects five original features that portray different decades in the lives of a multi-generational West Indian community in London. Set in the early ‘80s and rumbling to infectious, vintage dub, rocksteady, and reggae 7-inch sides—with a dash of disco and live toasting thrown in—Lovers Rock centers around a bustling Noting Hill house party. Peaking with an unforgettable rendition of Dennis Bovell’s soulful "Silly Games," McQueen’s film is a warm and affectionate portrait of Black immigrant life.
