“Just like Shrek, I too am like an onion.”

William Steig’s 1990 picture book inspired this computer-animated comedy, which upends the traditions of classic fantasies. Mike Myers provides the voice of Shrek, a gleefully misanthropic ogre, who finds his beloved swamp invaded by a menagerie of exiled fairy tale creatures, and teams up with the chatty Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and a cursed princess (Cameron Diaz). The first winner of an Animated Feature Film Oscar, it was also nominated for its witty screenplay and spawned three hit sequels and a Broadway musical.
