Director Franco Zeffirelli’s lavish film version of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy about the ill-fated love between two teenage children of warring families was the rare Shakespeare-based film to become a huge box office hit and a pop culture phenomenon. Nino Rota composed the lush score featuring a memorable love theme, and the film received four nominations including Best Picture and Directing, winning for Pasqualino De Santis’s warm cinematography and the exquisite period costumes of five-time nominee Danilo Donati.
