Filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho’s unpredictable blend of comedy and thriller, about a struggling family (led by Bong regular Song Kang-ho) who ingratiate themselves into an affluent household with disastrous results, became the first film not in the English language to win the Best Picture Oscar. The film also won Oscars for International Feature Film, Directing, and Writing (Original Screenplay), and was nominated for its production design and for Yang Jinmo’s editing, a key component of the film’s effortless tonal balance.
