Jacques Tati’s second feature film as a writer-director-star introduced his iconic character, Monsieur Hulot, in a classic slapstick farce. The clueless Hulot sets out for a simple seaside vacation only to encounter obstacles big and small, with Tati staging memorable comedic set pieces with understated elegance. Critic André Bazin called it “the most important comic work in world cinema since the Marx Brothers and W. C. Fields.” Tati and Henri Marquet were nominated for Writing (Story and Screenplay) in 1955.
