Love Jones

Love Jones

Set in the vibrant landscape of Chicago’s jazz and poetry scenes, Theodore Witcher’s debut feature focuses an intimate lens on the tentative romance between writer Darius (Larenz Tate) and photographer Nina (Nia Long). Opening with a beautiful sequence of black-and-white photos of Chicago, the city provides an immersive setting for Witcher’s sensitive and stylish exploration of young Black professional life. The beautiful cinematography and the film’s soundtrack play integral roles in conjuring the perfect atmosphere, with Coltrane and Ellington present alongside Lauryn Hill and Maxwell. Witcher’s sophisticated vision of Black creativity and romance resonates vividly even today.
