Author Laura Esquivel adapted her own 1989 bestseller for the screen, resulting in a charming, magic realism romance that became a breakout hit in the United States under the sensitive direction of Alfonso Arau, with luminous cinematography by Steve Bernstein and three-time Oscar-winner Emmanuel Lubezki. Lumi Cavazos plays Tita, a young woman prevented by her domineering mother from spending her life with the man she loves (Marco Leonardi from Cinema Paradiso), only to discover that the food she expertly prepares also has magical powers.
