Director Ridley Scott followed up his science-fiction classic Blade Runner (1982) with an equally opulent fantasy that cast a pre-Top Gun Tom Cruise as Jack o’ the Green, a young forest dweller who must travel to the underworld to rescue his beloved princess and a unicorn from the evil Darkness (Tim Curry). Production designer Assheton Gorton filled Pinewood Studios’ 007 Stage with a massive forest set, lit exquisitely by cinematographer Alex Thomson (Excalibur), and Rob Bottin and Peter Robb-King were nominated for the film’s imaginative makeup creations, including Curry’s memorably satanic villain.
