Writer-director Christopher Nolan’s action-packed sci-fi thriller takes place in a near future when science has given people the ability to enter and influence other people’s dreams. Leonardo DiCaprio plays one such “extractor,” whose latest assignment is imperiled by a tragic figure from his own past. The film received high praise for its dazzling visuals, winning Oscars for its Cinematography (Wally Pfister) and Visual Effects (Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley, Peter Bebb), but the film’s soundscape was equally important to its impact in subtly evoking the film’s overlapping dream worlds, with additional Oscars won for Sound Editing (Richard King) and Sound Mixing (Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo, Ed Novick).
