Tilda Swinton portrays the Russian-born wife to a textile magnate (PippoDelbono) in this sensuous and epic family saga about desire, duty, and deviance. Inhabiting a baronial mansion (the Necchi Campiglio Villa by the architect Piero Portaluppi, 1935) in the heart of Milan, the family is thrown into disarray when a successor for paterfamilias Eduardo Sr. (Gabriele Ferzetti) is announced. Meanwhile, Swinton becomes entangled in an affair with her grandson’s business partner (EdoardoGabbriellini) in a restaurant venture on the gleaming Italian Riviera. The film marks the third of a current total five collaborations between Swinton and the film’s co-writer/director Luca Guadagnino.
