The Academy Museum and OneSky present a conversation between author Yunte Huang and filmmaker Arthur Dong about the life and career of the famed Chinese American movie star Anna May Wong. Followed by a book signing of Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History with author Yunte Huang.

Huang’s book Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History details her life from birth to Hollywood fame against current events and racism.

Bios
Yunte Huang is a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A Guggenheim Fellow, he is the author of Charlie Chan (Norton, 2010), which won the Edgar Award and was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. His book Inseparable (Liveright, 2018), also a finalist for the NBCC award, was named one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, NPR, and Newsweek. He has published articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, PMLA, and others, and has been featured on NPR, CBS, BBC, C-SPAN, and others. His new book, the third and final installment of his “Rendezvous with America” trilogy, Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History, was published by Liveright in 2023 and named one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, Smithsonian, and BookRiot.

Arthur Dong is an author, historian, film scholar, and curator. He is an Oscar- and Emmy-nominee, and Peabody and Sundance awardee whose films include: Coming Out Under Fire, Forbidden City, USA, Hollywood Chinese, Licensed to Kill, Sewing Woman, and The Killing Fields of Dr. Haing S. Ngor. A Guggenheim Fellow, Arthur’s publications include Forbidden City, USA: Chinatown Nightclubs, 1936-1970 (American Book Award), and Hollywood Chinese: The Chinese in American Feature Films (Asian Pacific American Award in Literature). Among his curatorial commissions were for: the Boston Lyric Opera, the Chinese American Museum, the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum, the Formosa Café, and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures where he programmed the month-long film series, “Hollywood Chinese: the First 100 Years”. An Academy member since 1997, Arthur served as governor of the documentary branch and is a founding member of the Academy Museum’s Inclusion Advisory Committee.
