Designated hours to experience the museum in a less-sensory-stimulating setting.

We invite visitors to explore the artistry of Studio Ghibli during our Calm Morning program on April 30, from 9am to 1pm. ASL interpretation provided.

First, explore the museum’s Hayao Miyazaki special exhibition, where sound adjustments will be made for a more sensory-friendly environment. Next, visit the Shirley Temple Education Studio for a pre-recorded watercolor tutorial with Studio Ghibli background artist Yoichi Nishikawa, along with a tanzaku wish making activity—a Japanese custom celebrated during the Tanabata, or Star Festival, where people write their well wishes on colorful strips of paper, as seen in When Marnie Was There (2014).

In addition to the Calm Morning program, visitors are invited to attend our accommodative screening of When Marnie Was There (2014) at 11am in the Ted Mann Theater, as part of our weekly Family Matinees film series. A separate admission ticket is required.

Calm Mornings create an environment for all visitors to enjoy less-sensory-stimulating spaces with moderated sound and lighting displays. Museum staff will be available to suggest areas for self-guided exploration before the museum’s opening hours. Museum educators will be available for guided Gallery Highlight experiences that are interactive and adaptable to many learning styles.

If you have any questions or need assistance planning your visit, please email museumeducation@oscars.org.

Academy Museum accessibility initiatives are made possible in part by the Ruderman Family Foundation. This program is also made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Hayao Miyazaki is presented by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in collaboration with Studio Ghibli. It is organized by Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Exhibition Curator Jessica Niebel and Assistant Curator J. Raúl Guzmán. This exhibition also is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture. In-kind airfare provided by All Nippon Airways. Special thanks to the Japan Foundation for their partnership.
