Rope in 35mm nitrate

A pair of college students (John Dall, Farley Granger) kill a classmate to prove their intellectual superiority—and host a dinner party with the body hidden in the room—in this film version of Patrick Hamilton’s stage thriller, loosely inspired by the real-life 1924 Leopold & Loeb murder case. Alfred Hitchcock, working for the first time in color, made Rope one of his boldest stylistic experiments by keeping the play’s limited setting and staging the entire film with carefully choreographed takes and few overt cuts. James Stewart was expertly cast against type as the killers’ witty, cynical mentor in the first of four films he would star in for the director.

Programmed by K.J. Relth-Miller.
