Selected by the Documentary Branch.
Director Asif Kapadia (Senna) and producer James Gay-Rees (Exit through the Gift Shop) won the Documentary Feature Oscar for this thorough and moving look at the art and tragically short life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse (1983–2011). Incorporating interviews with her collaborators and loved ones, as well as extensive, rare footage of the star, including home movies, the documentary explores her addiction issues without letting them overwhelm its multi-dimensional portrait of Winehouse as a musical artist and a complicated human being.
DIRECTED BY: Asif Kapadia. WITH: Amy Winehouse, Lauren Gilbert, Juliette Ashby, Nick Shymansky. 2015. 128 min. UK. Color. English. Rated R. DCP.
