Allegro Non Troppo

Selected by the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch.

Bruno Bozzetto, an Oscar nominee for his 1990 animated short Grasshoppers, directs this collection of animated vignettes that pays homage to the Disney classic Fantasia (1940) while displaying Bozetto’s own distinctive vision and sensibility. The film is divided into six segments, each animated to a piece of classical music, including Claude Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero,” and Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird.” The sequence set to Jean Sibelius’s “Valse Triste” that focuses on an abandoned cat is a heart-rending highlight.
